Peru 2013
Jaen to Bagua Grande
41 miles 2,000
feet of climbing
After a pleasant night at the Hotel Cesar, other than the
heat, we left Jaen the way we came. The
four mile climb was a morning eye opener followed by a chance to experience the
eight mile downhill we had climbed yesterday.
After the downhill we followed the Rio Chamaya until the merge with the
Rio Utcubamba. Although we were
following the river upstream, the grades we not too steep.
When we reached Bagua Grande we learned we had another
change in hotel. The Hotel Rio served us
lunch, dinner and breakfast the next morning.
The hotel had a swimming pool and a pleasant setting along the river
away from the noise of the town. The
meals were excellent. I enjoyed a dish
of grilled fish, fried scallops (or something very similar), shrimp, and
something similar in taste and texture to clams. Identification of fish species is not
something that’s done much away from the coast.
I’m told in the Amazon the variety is fascinating. I’m looking forward to more healthy eating.
The scenery is greener and lusher with each mile we pedal to
the east.
